Pink Fantasy - our opinion

Was not expecting to write another opinion review this soon (although quite short), but ….

To start we have to say that these girls are great singers, dancers and actors. Using fake blood, creepy contact lenses, unnatural choreography, wicked glares, evil gazes and unnerving smiles, they have created some of the most interestingly bizarre music videos that we have ever seen. Taking the creep factor to the maximum, on a logarithmic scale. As well as some fairly normal videos along the way.

Unfortunately, they officially disbanded in 2024 after about six years and eleven official music videos, but what a handful of videos they are.

For those unaware of who we speak, stay tuned as we introduce you to one of the more unique K-pop girl groups, and the small handful of music videos they have created.

The group changed lineups a few times. With a mix of Korean and Japanese members.

If you have never seen their videos, you are in for a hopefully pleasant surprise.

We have included a link to a short YouTube playlist featuring the videos reviewed, at the end of this post. — being a fairly short review, you should be able to easily scroll passed my lame reviews ๐Ÿ˜„

Their concept is supposedly based on fairy tales, such as Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella. ๐Ÿคจ๐Ÿ˜

2018

‘IRIWA’
(Aini, SeeA, Yechan, Rai, Harin, Arang, Heesun, Daewang)
A fairly normal, well maybe for them, music video. A light Pop song featuring the group in white, mostly shorts and tops, wearing rabbit ears. Daewang is wearing her full white rabbit head.

If you think this is bizarre, standby they were just getting started.

Oh yeah, we neglected to mention Daewang is never seen without a mask. — we have no idea why, apparently it was just the groups’ gimmick

2019

‘12 O'Clock’
(SeeA, Yechan, Yubeen)
Three member subunit.
Okay. Here is the Cinderella influence (we suppose).
In the short intro, a blonde SeeA is with someone wearing a white rabbit head (Daewang?). Noticing the clock, she runs away, loosing a slipper, as the other person follows.

The rest of the video has the three members singing a snappy Pop song, on the street and sidewalk of a seemingly quaint little town.

'Fantasy'
(SangA, Aini, Yechan, SeeA, Heesun, Harin, Arang, Daewang)

(going by the number of views on YouTube, this seems to be their most popular video)

A straight up slightly anime-ish Rock tune with orchestration and a strong piano bridge.
(don't even try to tell me that these girls can't sing)

We have to admit, as much as we like some of the other videos, this is our favorite of their songs, and can not understand how such a talented group did not get more recognition. Unless, of course, being with a smaller company.

'Playing House’
(Aini, SeeA, Yechan, SangA, Harin, Arang, Daewang)
Another milder somewhat catchy bubble gummy Pop tune. With the group dancing on an outdoor basketball court, dressed in fairly normal clothes.

It is somewhat amusing, with choreography that seems more ad-libbed than the norm, and the normally obscure Daewang, wearing her full black rabbit head, actually hogs the camera in at least one place.

‘Not Beautiful’
(Yechan, Yubeen)
Two member subunit.
A nice slow duet, with a simple video; apparently shot mostly on a rooftop.

____
2020

‘Shadow Play’
(Arang, Harin, SangA, SeeA)
Four member subunit.
An Arabic scaled tune, with about half the video shot in barren outdoors, the rest in various colored indoor sets.

A black haired SeeA and Harin, red haired Arang and blonde SangA all show their rapping ability, and dancing, of course.

____
2021

‘Lemon Candy’
(SeeA, Yechan, Harin, Arang, Heesun, Daewang)
They apparently shifted back into a good girl mode, but of course, that never lasts. — Is fun to watch.

Is a fairly standard K-pop tune. With six members of the group dancing in a fairly normal looking video, wearing fairly typical K-pop clothing. Daewang is wearing either her full white rabbit head or the white cat mask.
— and it is still a little strange ๐Ÿ˜‰
(How did SeeA rotate at the beginning? ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜)

‘Alice in Darkland’
[dance intro video]
? (SeeA, Yechan, Harin, Momoka, Arang, Miku, Heesun, Daewang) ?
Perhaps the Alice in Wonderland influence ?
We get to watch them dance to some very bizarre electronic, Asian/Arabic scaled music. In a stark set, flooded with red light and white strobes. With Arang sporting blonde hair on the left and black on the right, SeeA blonde once again, and Daewang in her black cat mask.

‘Poison’
(SeeA, Yechan, Harin, Momoka, Arang, Miku, Heesun, Daewang)
This is what nightmares wish they were made of.
The song starts with the group wearing hooded robes in a large circular room. As a music box plays.

Then the heavy Rock music starts. With Arang, with two-tone hair and heavy, streaked eyeliner, Yechan is cozying up to someone wearing a robe and horned skull mask (perhaps Daewang?) eventually taking it for herself, Harin is reading from a book, eventually having a large butterfly in front of her mouth, Momoka is eating a bloody apple, Heesun is setting amongst white feathers, then eventually black ones, as blonde SeeA seems obviously preoccupied with a life-size (plastic?) skeleton, and Miku complete with streaked eyeliner, is ripping her way out of a cloth sack with a short sword. With Daewang in her black cat mask, being her usual creepy self.

Occasionally, with some wearing cat eye contact lenses. With several of the girls wearing antlers at different points. Interspersed with the usually cool dancing, of course. Oh yeah, at one point someone playing an electric guitar is doing Death Metal screams. — and a few other assorted various symbolism

( Just writing this I am saying, and you may be thinking, “What?!” —— No, we are not making this up. Someone obviously had a wild imagination. )

( — whew! That was a wild ride ๐Ÿ˜ — but it ain't over yet. ๐Ÿ˜ณ)

— Oh, and there are at least three other versions of that video.

‘Tales of the Unusual’
(SeeA, Yechan, Harin, Momoka, Arang, Miku, Heesun, Daewang)

Speaking of nightmares. ๐Ÿ˜‹

There are at least three official versions of this video. The normal version ๐Ÿคจ, with the group in black. A zombie version ๐Ÿ˜ƒ, with more colored lighting, with the group in white to gray to black smeared outfits. Mimimal, but effective zombie makeup with several of the girls wearing very creepy contact lenses and numerous fake, black tattoos. Both versions have Daewang wearing her black cat mask, and all the girls with black hair. And a feedback version, which combines and alternates between the first two; which also nearly eliminates the male voice heard on the other two versions.

— Fans of Dreamcatcher may recognize the set. It appears to be the same one used for their Demian music video.

'Merry Fantasy’
(SeeA, Yechan, Harin, Momoka, Arang, Miku, Heesun, Daewang)
Yep, it is a Christmas song.
A fairly standard Christmas Pop music tune, with the group dressed in white, dancing in a pink and white studio.
— One wonders if there was a Jekyll and Hyde thing going on, or maybe they just wanted to balance the normal with the bizarre. ๐Ÿ˜‰

____
2022

‘Get Out’
(Yechan, Momoka, Arang, Harin, Heesun, Miku)
Daewang being absent, may have been a good indicator of the nearing end of the group. ?

This is apparently the last full music video.
Featuring six of the group dressed in either white sleepwear, with streaks of red makeup on their faces which look like fresh abrasions, or black outfits without the red makeup. (perhaps a Jekyll and Hyde thing ?) — maybe just a little spooky ๐Ÿ˜
— Fans of Rolling Quartz or AleXa may recognize one set from the Rolling Quartz BLACKPINK / BTS cover video featuring AleXa.

‘The Game'
[dance video]
(Momoka, Arang, Harin, Heesun, Miku)
Five members of the group are dancing to a heavily distorted electronic track, in a dimly lit studio with a blue background in normal, torn, tattered, blood smeared clothes, faces, and creepy contact lenses. Going by the minimal lyrics it seems to be tied in with Squid Game. or at least referencing it. — yes, of course it is bizarre — and creepy cool, — think zombies on steroids

We are not dancers, or choreographers, but some of their moves look like they would be pretty hard.

___
What happened?!

It is, of course, often too easy to second guess, and without knowing what went on behind the the scenes; who knows? However, there are a few obviously glaring issues that someone like myself should not be able to notice. Such as, the inconsistent titles on the music videos, and the lack of a dedicated YouTube channel.

Although just our opinion (and no one really cares what we think). It seems that there was much too long of a gap between songs like Fantasy and Poison. The number of YouTube views, with the possible exception of Shadow Play, does seem to suggest that.

___
There are however quite a few live performance videos scattered around YouTube, Also, you can find several dance versions and behind the scenes videos on the companies YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/@playmaker_crew

Three former members (Arang, Harin and Heesun) were in the the group I:Z, which failed to debute.

Currently Arang, Miku and Momoka are in the mixed gender group ToTh6y.

The other former members are apparently pursuing other activities.

we do hope to hear them all again sometime in the near future
